Teardrop Trailer – The teardrop trailer,
as we know them, probably first appeared in the very early
1930s. The compact camping trailer derives its name from the
streamlined “teardrop” shape. The teardrop gained popularity in the late 1940s as GI returned home from World War II. Improvements were being made to the roads and the teardrop could be towed by just about anything. The teardrop offered a convenient and economical way to get out and explore the scenic highways and byways. A teardrop can best be described as being 4’ wide, 4’ high, and 8’ – 10’ long. There is room for two people to sleep comfortably inside. The kitchen facilities are located under a hatch at the back of the teardrop. All of the comforts of home can be found this compact use of space. Over the years magazines have offered “do-it-yourself” plans for those that wanted to build their own teardrop. Today, there are still being manufactured and teardrop clubs get together. |
